LocationThe hamlet of Saint-Etienne-de-Gourgas is 7km from the cathedral town of Lodeve, which has a fantastic traditional market on a Saturday morning and a good selection of shops and restaurants, plus banks, tourist information and supermarkets. The hamlet nestles in Le Cirque du Bout du Monde, a natural geographical phenomenon, which is the starting point for several stunning walks.
The nearest large city is Montpellier, which is about 45km away and easily reached via the new motorway. Also within easy reach are Clermont L’Heraut, Pezenas, Lac du Salagu and the coast around Sete. A little further afield are the fascinating walled town of Carcassonne and the Roman town of Arles, sitting on the edge of The Carmargue. The area around the coast from Valras to Sete is wonderful to visit with large sandy beaches and amazing seafood at beachside coquillage stalls. The area is also home to some top class wine producers being close to the Terasses du Larzac and Pic Saint Loup regions, of particular note the Mas de Daumas Gassac at Aniane, site of the re-birth of Languedoc wine. Our guide to the local area will give you detailed information about the many special places we have discovered over the years, such as the best spot for oysters, local cafes with lovely views and live music, great beaches, hidden walks and areas of historical interest. We can also suggest a wine itinerary or discuss the best cycle routes to suit your interests. |
